Hi there, fellow Christmas Crafters! Karen here from Didyoumakethat? I've just finished the above scarflet and have cast on a second - one each for my two sisters. These make great little Christmas presents, based on this pattern. I didn't follow the pattern to the letter, substituting a simple knit one, purl one with two knit stitches at either end of each row for a border.
I used a new Rowan wool called Silk Twist. It's exactly what it says on the tin: 53% silk, with 12% mohair and 30% wool. (The other 5% is polyamide, whatever that is!) All you really need to know is that this wool glistens with silky gorgeosity. Look!
As you might imagine, this wool isn't cheap - about £7 a ball. Which would make it close to prohibitive for the making of a jumper. But for a sweet little scarflet that needs only one ball of wool? What's not to like? Throw in some gorgeous wooden buttons from John Lewis, Oxford Street and - hey, presto! - you have a Christmas present that could be made in a weekend.
Your only challenge after that is in giving the scarflet away. You may want to keep it for yourself...
Extra! Extra! The Guardian has clearly cottoned on to our Christmas Crafting and today included its own guide to three different Christmas crafting projects here.
All the best yarn is expensive. :-(
